Notes:An artist's book made by slitting open the bellows of an unrepairable A. Rosati accordion and inserting images and text to create the pages of the book.
The front side of the accordion consists of the keys, the buttons, and ten pages. Nine of those pages are illustrations, one is the title page.
The back side of the accordion consists of 12 pages, five of which are illustrations, seven of which are text. The first six pages present the history of the accordion and of the accordion book, with a colophon at the end. The final page is the artists' statement.
The caption title for the history text is "The word accordion," completed by the sentence, [The word accordion] was first used in the nineteenth century to describe a portable box-shaped musical instrument.
"This real accordion book was made ... for Yale's Beinecke Library in the late fall and winter of 2015 ... This is a one-of-a-kind book"--Colophon.
"This real accordion book is one of a series of artists books initially structured around a visual pun, the accordion book"--Artists' statement.
The images are photographs of accordion players digitally printed on handmade paper and then hand colored; the pages of text, also printed on handmade paper, are hand decorated; each page is surrounded on three sides by a decorative cloth border.
