Biographical / Historical note:William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878), American poet, journalist, and editor of the New York Evening Post ( where he began working in 1827 after a career in law).

Summary:The William Cullen Bryant collection consists of letters, drafts, and notes (many of which were removed from printed material). The correspondence is comprised of Bryan'ts outgoing letters, the earliest being a letter written from Paris in 1834. Correspondents include: Dr. T. A. Cheney, James T. Fields, and Joseph P. Thompson. Drafts of Bryant's poem "A Hymn" (copied on December 30, 1867) and his translation into English of Homer's The Iliad (books II, III, VI-IX, XIV, XV, XVII, and XXIV) are in the collection. A portrait of Bryant, engraved by G. Parker, is also included in the collection.
